  1. Stephen Fry says "it is a game changer, and things will alter" - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/newsnight/8485049.stm - how so? the iPad is proclaimed as the saviour of the publishing industry? again, how so? there are two significant ways this might happen (1) the e-book format today is a static digital copy, limited by the physical object - the e-book can become the i-book by being truly interactive and embedded with streaming videos or photos or customized endings or the inevitable hybridization of audio books with text and visuals - this is possible because the iPad creates a more conducive user experienc (2) newspapers online can come "alive", Harry Potter style, as the iPad has a larger real estate to play with in terms of visualization of content, and text is not necessarily lost next to video - electronic newspapers can be transformed into interactive real time blogging tools. Perhaps, the iPad will be hailed as the first device to truly maximize and enhanced the use of Web 2.0 technologies through product design that emphasizes design to liberate the static linear format of the book.

  2. and now compare this with Steve Ballmer's description of Microsoft's Slate PC on 6 jan 2010 - http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/microsoft/2010725499_ces07.html - "We are talking about something as portable as a phone and as powerful as Windows 7," Ballmer said to an audience of more than 3,500 at the Las Vegas Hilton Center. "And they are perfect for reading, for surfing the Web and for taking entertainment on the go." Misses the point of media convergence and the role of product design to liberate web 2.0 technologies
